RIDING WITH DONNIE BAIR
“Riding With Donnie Bair”, a photo essay for Gamebreaker Magazine, documents the quiet, evolving relationship between Donnie Bair and a high school basketball player, AJ Ireland, shaped through routine car rides to practices and games.
What began as a simple arrangement gradually became something more personal, as repeated conversations about basketball and everyday life built familiarity and trust between the two figures in the community. Donnie himself was an unassuming but constant presence, that lived a modest, routine life and navigated significant personal challenges, including being deemed medically incompetent and dependent on others for support. I tried to reflect these in-between moments within the photos—inside the car, before and after games—where connection formed naturally over time.
I tried to emphasize atmosphere, routine, and proximity, revealing how even within a difficult and constrained life, small, consistent interactions can build genuine connection and leave a lasting emotional imprint.
